Democracy Sausage

The RFDS UK Friends were delighted to be invited by the High Commission to run a sausage sizzle on the steps of Australia House during the Federal Election.

The sausage sizzle raised a fantastic £1,400 for the RFDS Friends in the UK. It was also a great chance for the trustees and RFDS supporters to brush up on their BBQ skills and meet the many Australians who turned out to vote.

Australia House is the largest, and surely the most impressive, polling booth in the Federal Election with more than 15,000 people voting there over the week leading up to the election. The sausage sizzle was held on the last Saturday the polls were open, that day being the most popular day for people to vote.

In all, the RFDS sold nearly 1500 sausages with the traditional slice of bread, onion and tomato sauce! It was a great day to meet so many Aussies who appreciate the work of the RFDS.

We would like to thank all those who generously supported us on the day, the RFDS volunteers who helped out running the BBQ and the High Commissioner, George Brandis, and the High Commission staff who assisted in organising the sausage sizzle. The High Commissioner even had time to show us his expertise on the BBQ!

Democracy sausage has finally arrived in the UK!
